Why Sponge Wears Out Faster Than the Rack

Sponge rubber is deliberately soft, which is exactly why it is the first component to go. Every load you strap down compresses it, and every kilometre of corrugated gravel works it against the load. Over time it takes a permanent set, stops springing back, and eventually tears or splits at the point where the strap tension is highest. Once it has compressed flat it is no longer protecting anything, and the hard surface underneath goes straight onto your kayak, board or bike frame.

Choosing the Length

This is the long version. Holdfast also supplies a short rubber tube sponge (294100) for shorter runs. Measure the section you are covering before ordering rather than working from memory, and replace sponge in matched sets so that the load sits level across every contact point instead of bearing down on the one piece that is still full thickness.
