The Wheel Chock (part 22144A) is a genuine Holdfast replacement bicycle wheel chock, supplied as either a left or right hand unit. This is a bike carrier component, not a vehicle safety chock: it is the moulded cradle that the bicycle wheel drops into on the carrier, locating the wheel and stopping it rolling or twisting out of position while the strap holds it down.
Left and right chocks are mirror images and are not interchangeable. Fit the wrong hand and the chock will not sit down square on the carrier, which puts the wheel at an angle and loads the strap unevenly. Work out which one you need with the carrier in front of you, standing behind the vehicle looking forward, and order to match. If you are replacing both, order one of each rather than two of the same.
Replace the chock if it is cracked, if the cradle has spread or deformed so the wheel no longer seats down into it, if the mounting points are elongated or damaged, or if UV has made the material brittle enough to flex and creak under load. A chock that lets the wheel sit proud is doing half its job, and the strap will be taking load it was never meant to take on its own.
