The Hub Bike Carrier (part 298108) is a genuine Holdfast replacement hub for the Holdfast bike carrier range. The hub is the pivot component the carrying arms turn on, so it is a wear item on any rack that gets folded and unfolded regularly.
This is the point where most orders go wrong. Holdfast changed the hub design, and carriers from 2021 onwards take a different part, Hub Bike Carrier 2021, part 298110. The two are not interchangeable. Before ordering, establish roughly when your carrier was made and match the part number to it rather than to the photograph.
If you are unsure of the age, the safest approach is to remove the existing hub and read the part number off it, or send the Holdfast team a photograph of the carrier and the hub before you order.
Replace the hub if the arms have developed play that cannot be taken up by tightening, if the bore has worn oval, if there is cracking around the pivot or any fixing point, or if the arms no longer hold their set position under load. Play at the hub multiplies along the length of the arms, so a small amount of wear at the pivot shows up as a lot of movement at the bike.
