When to Replace It

Clamping hardware carries the entire load path between your rack and your vehicle, so it is worth inspecting rather than assuming. Replace the assembly if you can see any visible distortion or opening-up of the U piece, if the bracket is cracked or bent, if the threads are stripped or galled, or if corrosion has reduced the section anywhere along the part. A clamp that no longer holds torque is a clamp that will let go, and it will do so under exactly the load and vibration conditions that caused the wear in the first place.

Fitting Notes

Replace clamping components as a set rather than mixing a new U piece with an old bracket, since a worn mating face will concentrate load unevenly on the new part. Tighten to the torque specified in your rack fitting instructions rather than by feel, and re-check the fittings after your first drive and after any extended gravel travel.
