WINTER BUSHVELD ADVENTURES. WHICH PARKS TO VISIT IN SOUTH AFRICA

As things dry up for winter in the northern and eastern parts of the country, it makes for a perfect opportunity to escape into the bush. As the vegetation thins out, you’re more likely to catch a glimpse of those elusive species and once-in-a-lifetime sightings!

We are spoiled for choice in South Africa when it comes to National Parks. All across the country there are a multitude of incredible bushveld experiences that will make for the perfect holiday away from the city. With an Adventure Roof Rack platform atop your vehicle you have the perfect mounting point for all of your essential equipment and gear, allowing you to head out and explore new horizons!

Below you’ll find some of our top picks for Parks that you need to visit + some info on our Adventure Roof Rack that provides the ideal platform for your overland gear to be secured to as you venture into the wilder places!

1. MOUNTAIN ZEBRA NATIONAL PARK, EASTERN CAPE

In the rolling plains and deep valleys of the Mountain Zebra National Park, the Cape Mountain Zebra has been preserved from extinction. This national park boasts a range of attractions, including game viewing, 4×4 trails and cheetah tracking.

There is a range of accommodation options, from camping to self-catering cottages, in various locations in the park. If you love the seclusion that 4×4 access roads afford, check out their Mountain Cottages for tranquility and beautiful starry nights.

2. MARAKELE NATIONAL PARK, LIMPOPO

In the heart of the Waterberg Mountains, the Marakele National Park boasts a wide variety of wildlife as it lies in the intersection of dry western climates and wet eastern climates of South Africa. Marakele, ‘a place of sanctuary’, is full of breath taking views and home to the Big 5.

A 4×4-ers paradise, Marakele National Park has lots of trails to explore and is the perfect opportunity to go rooftop camping. Should you seek a taste of comfort, check out the Marataba Luxury Lodges situated on a private concession of the national park.

3. KGALAGADI TRANSFRONTIER NATIONAL PARK, NORTHERN CAPE

Tick Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park off your bucket list! It’s a once in a lifetime adventure but requires booking ahead so get on top of that as quick as you can!

We’d recommend late winter, spring, or autumn for the best conditions. As a cross-border conservation effort between South Africa and Botswana, there is a vast area to explore and many incredible locations where you can pull the handbrake up, erect your tent, and soak in the evening scenes. Be sure to take your passport along.

If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, put your 4×4 to the test with the 214km Nossob 4×4 Eco Trail. This 4 day adventure traverses along majestic sand dunes where you camp along the way completely self-catered, making it a unique and rugged experience.Knysna Heads, Garden Route
